Stravinsky’s acid comment that Vivaldi composed one concerto 500 times is easily dismissed when one hears the sheer variety and wealth of invention contained on these 40CDs. His concertos also came to the attention of the young J.S Bach, who admired the Venetian master greatly, transcribing some of the concertos for organ. Vivaldi was one of the great violinist-composers of the baroque, and his dramatic and distinctive treatment of the concerto was hugely influential.
These CDs contain all his known concertos, and several receiving their premiere performances, plus his chamber music and choral settings – including the famous Gloria and an example of his stagework – the Drama with music ‘Il Teuzzone’ in 3 acts.
