GEORGE LEWIS and ALTON PURNELL - Three LPs on 2 CDs

GEORGE LEWIS and ALTON PURNELL - Three LPs on 2 CDs
£14.99
CD / Product Number: URCD233D

This double CD contains two complete George Lewis albums from 1958 recorded under the prestigious supervision of Norman Granz - plus a first UK release of an album by Alton Purnell. The first LP, 'The Perennial George Lewis', holds a special place in the hearts of many Lewis enthusiasts while the second LP, 'Oh Didn't He Ramble' (issued in the UK as a 10” album 'Raggin' And Stompin' and EP “New Orleans Memories”) is somewhat less well known but equal in stature. The third LP is of considerable added importance as it is a very scarce (only ever available in the States) album by longtime Lewis pianist, who had been in the band from the days of Bunk Johnson, Alton Purnell. Purnell's enormously appealing blues and boogie tinged playing (a great influence on Fats Domono) and vocals were an integral part of the important early '50s George Lewis band. This album came about through the instigation of tenor sax-man Plas Johnson (of Henry Mancini “Pink Panther” fame) who is featured on several tracks.

Reviews of This Recording

.....I'm so pleased that Upbeat are closing in on the Lewis recordings in the Verve catalogue in style.......The (George Lewis) band is swinging right from the start....on fine form throughout.....The Alton Purnell LP is a bit of a rarity....this is Alton as his entertaining best......So, well done to all the 'team' at Upbeat for having the empathy to look at this material for re-issue.
